Organic container gardening can be done even in the smallest apartment. Gardening in this way gives you a fresh supply of herbs that are chemical-free as well as decorating your apartment or patio.

You can control your herbs environment by moving the pots into the sun or shade whenever needed, giving you the chance to create perfect conditions for growing herbs even in poor climates.

Another advantage of organic container gardening is that you can give the herbs just the right soil and nutrients to thrive and do not have to depend on garden soil for a great harvest.

Potting Mix
Herbs do well in potting soil because it is free of insects and diseases that might be found in the regular garden soil. Garden outlets and landscape places sell organic mix, or you can mix your own soil. Just blend equal parts of:

- natural compost like dry cow or horse manure
- purchased organic potting soil
- washed coarse builders sand.

Containers
Next, in establishing your organic container gardening is to clean the pots with soapy water and rinse them out well as this minimizes any chance the pots become contaminated. Then line the bottom of the containers with pottery shards or small rocks and fill them 2/3 full with the soil. Allow some space for inserting the plants, then finish filling the pot with soil and remember to leave two inches of space under the rim of the pot for watering the herbs.

Pests and insects
One of the advantages of organic container gardening is that it attracts fewer insects than herbs grown in a conventional garden. If you do get insects however, spray them with some soapy water or some leftover black tea.

Favorite Herbs
Organic container gardening is easy and gives great results provided that the basic requirements are met. Some ideal herbs for organic container gardening are mint, oregano, sage, thyme, marjoram and basil, which grow well in pots.

Invasive herbs
Be careful not to grow the more invasive herbs together with slow growing herbs like sage. Mint is an example of an herb that should be grown in its own pot because it does eventually take over the space thus preventing the other plant to develop fully.

Organic container gardening takes only a little effort and in return it will beautify your home, provide a wonderful aroma and fresh healthy herbs to enjoy.

Bamboo gardening involves a little bit of care in the beginning, but the rewards are definitely worth it. Although you have to investigate what species is native to your local area, bamboo tends to be a very low maintenance plant that can weather many hard conditions.

Adding bamboo to your garden can give it an air of exoticness and serenity. Many people are scared of the rumors they have heard about the roots spreading wildly and even causing neighbor disputes over property lines. This can all be avoided by doing a small amount of research a head of time before planting.

Two things to check for are:

1) Are the bamboo plants you want in your garden native to your area or able to survive in your zone?
2) Is the bamboo a clumping type or spreading type of bamboo?

Obviously clumping types are easier to deal with, as they tend to stay bunched together. However, even spreading bamboo can be controlled. By either partially or fully surrounding the bamboo with a thick piece of plastic you can direct the spreading of the bamboo roots.

Bamboo roots tend to stay more toward the top, so going down about 2 feet should suffice. Having the bamboo area slightly raised with a ledge will allow you to see the roots extending each year and easily trim the back.

Bamboo are very durable and low maintenance, but they do need a little attention once or twice a year. Thinning the leaves once a year will also bring them back to life, so to speak. The leaves tend to get quite full and you loose the natural lines of the stems. Clipping and sculpting as you go, bring out the beauty of the plant.

Overall, the easiest way to do bamboo gardening is to plant the bamboo in a pot, paying special attention not to disturb the buds, and then burying the whole pot in the ground. In Japan this can be often be seen in many small gardens.

Using a nicely colored pot like a royal blue or some other color that blends with any flowers around will add a bit of art to you bamboo garden. Let a good 3 inches stick out of the ground to display both the bamboo and the pot.

Bamboo gardening can be a fun way to add something unique to your garden, whether you are going for a full Japanese garden effect, or merely want to add something different to your design. Trying to plant and lay the barrier yourself can be a great DIY project if you are one for details. Places like Grand Island Serene Gardens http://www.grand-island-serene-gardens.com/garden-center.html can also help you with the design and installation to ensure that your bamboo area stays enclosed to minimize spreading.

Indoor gardening is becoming more popular as technology improves and costs decrease for supplies and equipment. Growing indoors can be very rewarding and the results are absolutely fantastic when done correctly, that said, they can also be devastating when things go wrong.

In this article I would like to dispel some myths about indoor gardening as well as give some tips for simple ways to improve your harvest.

Myth #1: You can grow in any room indoors.

Growing indoors even in the best circumstances is more difficult than you would think at first, and depends a lot on “what” you are trying to grow. For this article I will focus on food bearing plants such as tomatoes and cucumbers, and other succulent garden plants, as well as herbs and fresh flowers and orchids. Plants such as garlic and carrots that create bulbs are even more challenging and will not be discussed at this time.

Tip #1: No matter what plants you decide to grow indoors, you will still need to meet its basic requirements for growth.

Mainly, good ventilation from the outside, Light, and fertilizer as well as a exhaust for the heat from the lights and built up oxygen that the plants cannot eat. Plants Breath CO2, but with global warming and all there is plenty of that in regular air, so just make sure your ventilation is good into and throughout the room. Light and fertilizer depend more on what you are trying to grow.

Myth #2: Indoor gardening doesn’t involve getting down and dirty.

Cleanliness is close to godliness. Growing indoors can be a messy job. Weather you decide to use hydroponics or soil, there is usually some sort of spills involved.

Tip#2: Plan for the worst! Enclose the growing area in a cheap and easy home-made reserve reservoir to prevent run-off and spills from damaging your home.

Create a wooden frame of 2x4s that sits flat on the ground and lay a giant plastic sheet (available at home depot) that tucks over the board on all sides. Be sure to measure before hand, but often you can get 12 x 30 ft or more. The idea is to create a giant tub below the plants in case of emergency. This is especially important for hydroponic systems that are not on the ground floor.

Do you enjoy strolling through the local garden center to see what is new like I do? All the major chains like Lowe’s Home Depot, Wal-Mart and Target all have the garden departments with a wide variety of plants, pots, rocks, soils, fertilizers and garden tools.

As wide of a variety that these chains possess they never seem to carry exactly what I’m looking for. For example, why empty out the wallet on a plant at a specialty garden store when one of the big boxes sells something ‘close’ at about half the price?

I’ve been working on a plant watering project lately and wanted to find some LECA rocks (Lightweight Expanded Clay Aggregate) to replant some houseplants in. This project will be removing houseplants from soil and completely replacing the media with rock all in an effort to simplify house plant care. Basically creating a simple self-watering container for the plant to grow in.

There is a Super Wal-Mart and Home Depot within 5 minutes of where I live and a Lowe’s 20 minutes away. The Wal-Mart and Home Depot are huge stores. After spending some time in each of the garden departments they do carry a good array of basics. In general the chains carry the top items and best sellers.

However, if you happen to fall into my shopping zone, a specialty store probably fits me better. A store, which carries a variety of, not only tools, pots, fertilizer and media. But a store, which also handles named varieties of plants.

Today so many named varieties are available that it is important to get yourself familiar with them. The Internet provides a wealth of information. For example, many people may be familiar with the common Chinese evergreen – Aglaonema ‘Silver Queen’. The ‘Silver Queen’ has been grown for decades for use in offices and house plant use. However, over the past few years many new hybrids have been introduced with broad leaves and color patterns. Plus they handle cooler temperatures than ‘Silver Queen’ can.

These new hybrids carry names like ‘Amelia’, ‘Silver Bay’, ‘Emerald Star’, ‘Jewel of India’ and ‘Silverado.’ These plants are superior in ease of care, cold tolerance and durability. New improved varieties come in almost every category. From Anthuriums to Spathiphyllum and even the popular Ficus now finds new varieties.

If you are looking to fertilize your lawn or replace your weed eater these big box stores may be fine. As far as a supply of lawn maintenance equipment, garden hoses, tools and other supplies like fertilizers and bags of special soil, the big stores have it covered. You can find some good plants for use indoors at these stores.

Follow these few tips for best results.

Look for an area in the garden center devoted to houseplants
Always buy fresh – Find out what day new plants arrive each week
Make sure the roots look good before you buy any plant
Research the web for new varieties and ask the manager to order them – they can!

Having plants indoors dress up any room. Buying healthy plants will make your plant care much easier. You can find them at the chains but you will need to do some work to find the best value. Value is not always price.

Gardening is considered a hobby for most of us. Planting seeds and growing them is a way to calm you from the pressure and tension of the environment around us.

Keeping a good garden ensures a fresh mind and a happy living. Time has its own value and just for the sake of relaxation, gardening is not entertained in the recent trend.

That is why the concept of this economic gardening came into existence.

It is a method by which economically valuable plants are grown with the space available and make the most out of them. In simpler terms, it is a hobby for those who want it as a hobby and a money yielding business for those who really want to make a living out of it.

To make this type of gardening successful, adequate planning is needed. The interrelationships of plants and their co-existence, shade tolerance, growth conditions, seasons are also considered.
Here are few methods to help have a happy garden.

The Raised Bed

By growing plants in an environment suitable for them to grow and then transplanting them to the field is the best practice that yields the maximum result. This type is usually followed in farming. Nevertheless, it can be used in gardening. Choosing the right plant, for example the onions and tomatoes, they may grow differently. Onion may require stagnant water while tomatoes may need water but not stagnant. Growing them together will degrade the output. Therefore, taking them to grow on beds, which are boxes filled with fertile sand and seeds are planted and grown well. Seeds can be purchased for few dollars but the output is so good that you have the vegetables home before anyone else have them. As the plant saplings reach a height of 10 to 12 inches, they are ready to face the gardening atmosphere. Now transferring them onto fields or green houses will ensure the result is extremely high.

Vertical Gardening

This method is highly successful for smaller gardening space. This involves the use of cages, nets or strings. Some plants like cucumber, tomatoes entwine themselves onto some support to grow. So, using a vertical stick or a cage and planting these plants will make them grow on to the support in a vertical fashion. These may even look prettier to keep as house decorative items. Also they consume lesser space and take less time to maintain.

Interplanting

Planting several types of crops together is interplanting. For example, onions and pepper can be planting together with no diminishing results. In addition, radishes and carrots are planted together. Before carrots mature, radishes can be harvested. This interplanting is usually done by placing alternate rows of plants. Plants like legumes, beans, restore the nutrients to the soil they grow. So plants with high nutrient needs can be grown together with these, preserving the soil fertility as well as saving your money.

Gardening is a way of developing ourselves patience. It calms the mind, brings fresh air and makes body more flexible. By choosing economically valuable crops and growing them, it even makes gardening better way of living. If it is properly done, excessive amount of harvest can yield a subsidiary income to the family. Happy family is all we want. Let the happiness begin from our garden.

You’ve decided to plant a garden but you need basic gardening tips for beginners, this is the place to be. Gardening has become a delightful hobby for people all over the world.

There are many rewards for the gardener, the visuals of his creation, the scent of the blooms, great fresh air and lots of exercise. Imagine a weekend spent in the yard with your feet up drinking in the spectacular gardens that you have created the fruits of your labor and love. If you are a beginner gardener, here are some basic gardening tips. No matter how much room you have, you can create a masterpiece garden.

The basic garden tips for beginners will help you create new gardens and make it a successful and joyful experience. In the beginning go slowly, start small but use your imagination. Choose a project that will not take a long time to complete. If it takes you weeks to finish a project you will get frustrated and start to hate the project you wanted to enjoy. Even if you have 75 or 100 square feet you will be amazed at how much you can plant.

If you are determined to have a larger project, then work in sections and turn your attention to one area at a time. This way as each section is finished you can enjoy that completed job. This will also build up your confidence as you go along making the next section not so daunting.

But for a beginner gardener a small scale garden is optimal. You are going to have to learn the basics of gardening, all about disease, the best way to control weeds and pests, the all important watering and when and how to fertilize. After your initial project you can enlarge the garden or plant one somewhere else in your yard with your new found confidence.

To cut down on the weeding of your garden, place mulch around the plants. This serves three purposes; it cuts down on weeding, as well as aiding in temperature control and water retention. Granted there are some gardeners that love to work the soil and weed the plants but it would be more rewarding to tending to the plants or just watching them grow. To maintain really healthy plants water for longer periods of time but less frequently. Do not let the plants dry out. Always water early in the morning so the plant leaves have time to dry out during the day which helps prevent fungal disease.

After planting, try to have your garden remain pesticide free. An especially good natural deterrent is as follows:

In a jar, combine 1 teaspoon dishwashing liquid and 1 cup vegetable oil. Shake vigorously. In an empty spray bottle, combine 2 teaspoons of this mixture and 1 cup water. Use at ten-day intervals (or more often if needed) to rid plants of whiteflies, mites, aphids, scales, and other pests.

These are the basic gardening tips for beginners. Remember, that you can create lovely gardens in containers which you can move around as you please. There are hundreds of different plant combinations and containers that you can use for a container garden. So, if you are an apartment or condo dweller, you can plant lovely gardens on your balcony or patio. The basic tip here is that container gardens will dry out much faster than the plants in the ground so be vigilant about checking them for moisture.

Happy Gardening And Good Luck!

The term gardening plants is a very broad term used to describe the various varieties of the plant species. This can refer to vegetables, fruits, flowers, grass, bushes, cactus etc. Flowers alone have thousands of species, and gardening plants as a term has to many species to even start on describing. Plants have characteristics to grow and thrive at different times of the year. Some are made for warm moist weather, while others are made for the dry desert heat. There are gardening plants that can adapt to practically any weather and there are thousands of species to fit your needs.

Gardening is not that hard in the correct conditions. Although, when trying to start a plant garden in the fall months it can be a bit more challenging. Gardening plants in the fall can take a little planning and knowledge. After careful research there is no reason you cannot have a garden in the fall. A few plants that can thrive in the colder fall season include the Rutabaga and the Christmas rose.

Another key ingredient to a garden is the vegetable section. There is nothing more satisfying than growing your own vegetables. You can practically grow any vegetable you eat. You would be surprised and the variety available at your disposal. A good tomato plant can be fast growing with a beautiful smell that lingers the whole season, while peppers can spice up your life. You can also grow cucumber, squash and watermelon. There are just to many options to list. Fruit is also an excellent consumable gardening plant. Nothing taste fresher than your homegrown strawberries or apricots. Homegrown cooking ingredients can also be fun to delve in. You can grow your own sage, paprika, lavender, chives and more.

Flowers are also a beautiful addition to your garden. There is nothing more beautiful than a blooming flower garden in the summer months. There are endless species of flowers to choose from, coming in all shapes, sizes and colors. Flowers are the prettiest of the gardening plants in my mind. You can have flowers that bloom in the spring or the summer, so you can literally have colorful flowers blooming half of the entire year. A few nice summer flowers include roses and lilies. The spring can bring out wonderful flowers such as tulips and violets. Flowers are an excellent addition to any garden.

There also plants that serves a dual purpose such as bushes or shrubs. These species of gardening plants can make for a great fence to block out the neighbors or end your property line. Shrubs can also perform as a beautiful for scenery for your home. In my opinion having a live fence is much easier on the eye than a fenced in wood or metal look.

Though, gardening is not the most difficult task in the world, it does take time and effort. A good garden can be very rewarding. Growing your own vegetables will not only save you money, but it will bring you great satisfaction. Whatever collection of gardening plants you choose you will be happy with your results. Just make sure to keep up with the watering and do your research. There are methods to help take some of the load of such as sprinklers or drip systems. I highly recommend using one of the two so you can spend more time concentrating on your green garden. My advice is don’t keep yourself to certain plant species, broaden your horizon and try something new.

Plan First

Growing flowers is pretty easy if you are educated; these rose gardening tips will make the job fun as well as rewarding. Begin by planning how the garden will look:

-What type of roses will complement your current flowers?
-Is there a specific color you want?
-Are you going to use beds or put flowers in pots on a small patio?
-Is there enough sunlight to provide at least 6 hours of sun?
-Make some notes about what you want before you decide to go to your local gardening center.

Also take into consideration the locate climate, find out what zone you live in and which varieties of roses are best suited for the area. Nothing is worse than falling in love with a variety of rose, and then finding out it will never grow in your yard! Your local garden expert will have that information as well.

The Right Tool For The Job

Every hobby has its own unique set of ‘tools’ or gadgets. Gardeners need garden tools, specifically designed to make the job of kneeling, digging, and clipping easier. The basics include pruners, heavy duty garden gloves to withstand working with thorns, a rake, and a short digging tool – fork or spade. It would be nice to have a kneeling pad (which is necessary for some of us!) and a wheelbarrow for carrying away weeds, debris, and cuttings.

Keeping tools in the best order is essential to keeping gardening enjoyable; these basic tips will help keep the garden shed organized:

-Keep tools in a basket or container with a handle and pockets. If everything is in one place the basket can quickly be picked up for a trip to the garden. This is the place to keep glue for sealing ends, pruners, packets of rubbing alcohol, pads for wiping pruners, and miscellaneous but necessary items.

-Consider buying some bright paint or purchase electrical tape in bright neon colors, and wrap/paint the handles of tools. Your pruners and spades will stand out in the grass when painted electric blue, and be clearly identified as yours. No more wasted time searching for missing garden implements.

-Take time at the beginning of each season to sharpen cutting instruments, clean tools, and prepare for the season.

-Make (And Stick To) A Schedule

Set up a schedule for chores, pay attention to weather conditions, and watch plants for dryness. Gardening should be fun, but it does require routine maintenance and attentiveness to bugs and possible rose diseases. Keep weeds under control by weeding weekly or more often. Remove weeds and leaf debris from the base of plants as a preventive measure for mildew. Weeding right after a rain is ideal as removal is easier when the soil is wet.

Find A Guru

Whether you’re new to gardening or consider yourself an expert, having a place to find information about roses is important. Check with your local garden supply store about groups in the area, or look for one of numerous forums on the internet.

There are some fantastic eBooks about rose garden solutions on the market as well. Just be sure to purchase from a site you trust.

Keep Notes For Future Reference

Keep track of your gardening activities. Make notes in a journal and add pictures. The garden will most likely be your pride and joy and is an ever-evolving project. Each new purchase can be noted with date of purchase, variety, and color of the plant. Track the flowers, noting what works and what doesn’t work.

Make notes about its blooming patterns, even taking a photo of the rose in bloom. This can be useful if you decide to propagate your own roses the following spring when colors are not visibly apparent. The journal will allow you to identify possible issues as well as provide feedback when adding new plants to your garden. If you should have to consult a gardening expert, notes will be handy with all the necessary information.

You’ll want to brag about the garden and share information about what tips and tricks worked best. Be sure to take good care of your plants and reap the rewards of a healthy, productive rose garden.

Swiss chard is a wonderful addition to any home vegetable garden. With the many varieties there are to grow, you can literally add a wide range of colors and flavors to salads and many other recipes. Here is how you can properly grow Swiss chard in your home vegetable garden.

I like to start it indoors about two weeks prior to last frost of the season. This gives my seeds ample time to germinate. If you plan on starting your seeds outdoors wait at least a week after the final frost of the season. Bury your seeds no deeper than a half inch, with the soil being no cooler than fifty degrees Fahrenheit and no warmer than eighty-five degrees Fahrenheit.

Swiss chard likes the soil pH level to be as near neutral as possible. Keep your soil around a pH reading of 7.0 or as close as you can get without going over 7.0. To take a reading of your soil’s pH level you can simply visit your local home or garden center and pick up a basic soil testing kit for just a couple of bucks.

Regardless of whether you started the seeds indoors or outdoors, space your it out at least eight inches to give them and their roots plenty of room to grow. Your watering of Swiss chard should be moderate and even and they grow best in full sun.

You have a couple of options when they are ready to be harvested. When the leaves get to be eight to ten inches you can simply cut the leaves off and eat them or you can cut the plant off at the stem about an inch above the soil level. The second option will allow the plant to continue to grow giving you more harvests throughout the season.

Swiss chard makes a good companion plant for cabbage, legumes and lettuce and bad companions for Swiss chard are beets and spinach. Also avoid following the bad companion plants in a plant rotation cycle.

As you can see growing Swiss chard is fairly easy. Just make sure you follow the steps above and you will be well on your way to a wonderful Swiss chard crop.
